Rotary Club of Boroko wheelchair donation to NOPS...
The Rotary Club of Boroko in conjunction with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) presented the National Orthotic & Prosthetic Service (NOPS) with a donation of 670 wheelchairs on Thursday 18th June. The hand-over ceremony was hosted by PNG's Secretary of Health Dr Clement Malau and attended by Rotary Club of Boroko President Brent St. Hill - who chose not to wear the Club's lovely new blue polo shirt...the one in the photo above in case you hadn't noticed - and LDS president for PNG and Solomon Islands, Tevita Funaki. NOPS Port Moresby Manager Rajesh Nanda said that 315 wheelchairs would remain in Port Moresby and the remainder was destined for NOPS in Lae

Rotary Club of Boroko pays tribute to Past President Sir James Jacobi...
The only man knighted for services to Rugby League has died in Brisbane at the age of 83. Sir James, knighted in 1991 for services to rugby league, was  known ubiquitously as "Jabber Jim" and worked in Papua New Guinea as a general practitioner for about 40 years during which time he became the first president of the PNG Rugby League, a position he held for more than 25 years. He oversaw PNG becoming a member of the International Rugby League Federation where he represented the country. Consequently, PNG began playing regularly against the Australian, New Zealand, English and French teams.

In Port Moresby, his surgery developed into the city's largest practice and treated rugby league players free of charge together with missionaries and many others who would have struggled to pay the fees. Sir James was born in Maryborough, graduated from the University of Queensland and served in the Royal Australian Air Force in PNG in the final stages of World War II.

Jeff Wall, a Brisbane-based consultant recently awarded the CBE by PNG, said, "Jim's enormous range of business, political and community contacts were regularly tapped to help develop the greatest game of all in the only country where its place as the national code, is unchallenged. He was a person of unbounded generosity, and his passion for rugby league - and the time he put into it despite seeing up to 60 patients a day in his medical practice - was inspirational"

Rotary Club of Boroko President Brent St. Hill said, "Sir James' exceptional contribution as President of the Rotary Club of Boroko, to PNG Rugby League, to PNG and the people of PNG is an outstanding and cherished legacy. Sir James will be long remembered by all whose hearts he touched over so many years. May he rest in peace"

Saving Joyce…

ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) proudly boasts another successful mercy mission as 11 year-old Joyce Raymond is flown to Melbourne for life-saving treatment for burns to 40% of her body

In June 2008 Joyce’s grass skirt accidentally caught fire while cooking and she was badly burned from her knees to the middle of her back. On remote Kanakwa Island in Sudest, Milne Bay there are no medical facilities to treat serious burns and under the care of Father Tony Young, Joyce remained at the Nimoa Catholic Mission Station aid post for almost six months and while her dressings were changed regularly, her burns were never going to heal…until Joyce was spotted by philanthropists Doug and Ann Rathbone who were visiting from Melbourne with executives from Doug’s Melbourne-based company, Nufarm

ROMAC became involved in February 2009 and with the aid of the Catholic Bishops Conference organised passports and visas to allow Joyce and her mother Lucia to fly to Melbourne. Travel formalities take time so ROMAC had Joyce transferred to Alotau Hospital where she received essential care and attention in preparation for her journey including suitable clothing and shoes for Melbourne’s brisk and chilly June climate! Notable was the assistance provided by Gari Conn, wife of ROMAC’s PNG director and member of the Rotary Club of Boroko, David Conn

The logistics of moving a critically ill child from Alotau through conventional travel routes were enormous so Joyce’s benefactors decided to take matters into their own hands! Doug Rathbone approached Lorne Cole at Jet City, a privately-owned international air ambulance service based at Essendon Airport, and with cooperation from PNG’s Customs and Immigration authorities, Doug and Lorne arranged and funded a Leah jet to fly to Alotau to collect Joyce and fly her directly to Melbourne. Accompanied by David Conn, a specialist nurse and members of her family, Joyce touched down safely in Melbourne and was met at the airport by Doug and Father Tony who was coincidentally visiting Melbourne to celebrate his mother’s 97th birthday! Also at the airport was Past President Ian Fry from the Rotary Club of Broadmeadows and former member of the Rotary Club of Boroko

Joyce was featured in the June 28th edition of the Sunday Herald Sun and her progress will be monitored by many caring Melbournians. Her treatment, which includes extensive skin grafting, is expected to take up to three months and will be funded by ROMAC

Fellows at the Rotary Club of Boroko wish Joyce all the very best with her treatment and safe return to her family and five sisters on beautiful Kanakwa Island. Get well soon Joyce! We look forward to meeting you at our Thursday evening Club meeting…

Cheshire Homes to benefit from a very courageous walk...
Members of the Rotary Club of Boroko were touched by the gallantry of Patricia Dear who will undertake the walk of her life when she attempts to conquer the treacherous Kokoda Track on 16th July to raise money for Cheshire Homes in Port Moresby. Not only did the Fellows dig deep at the Club Meeting on 9th July and raise K2,000 for Patricia, but Dr Pulotu made an unexpected, generous and well-received donation of medical services for permanent staff of Cheshire homes. Patricia was accompanied by Cheshire Homes workers, Barbara McGrory and Peter Kaipel who also spoke to the fellows about the challenges and achievements of staff and volunteers at Cheshire Homes

Patricia's valour deserves recognition...please assist. Contact Patricia Dear or President Kevin Zimmerman

The Fellows are looking forward to welcoming Patricia home and to hearing all about her adventures and trials at a Club meeting later in the year...God speed Patricia!

Update...

On Thursday 3rd September Patricia briefed Club members about her triumphant victory over the Kokoda track. Not only did she successfully conquer the track but she raised K15,000 for Cheshire Homes! Patrick Kainap, Manager of Cheshire Homes, accompanied Patricia to the meeting and outlined how Patricia's donation will make a very significant difference for their residents...well done Patricia!!
